About 456 Wineries
456 Wineries is a winery business incubator and shared tasting room in Wamego, and the first of its kind east of the Rocky Mountains. Grown out of the Viticulture and Enology program at Highland Community College, it opened in late summer 2019 to help new Kansas wineries get established by sharing production space, equipment, and a tasting room.
The concept came together over nearly a decade of ideas, grants, and gifts tied to Highland's program, which planted its first vines in 2009 and began selling wine in 2012. Under one roof, visitors can taste from several individually licensed startup wineries, among them Highland Vineyards and Winery, the Osage County-based Bodine Wine Company, Zydeco Meadery, and Red Rock Hill Vineyards, each pouring from its own designated area while sharing key equipment like crushers and presses. Tastings run five samples for five dollars with a keepsake glass, and from April through October the winery hosts Saturday events with live music from local musicians, food trucks, and a fire pit.
Hours, tasting fees, and reservation policies change with the season, so it is worth checking the winery's website or calling ahead before you visit, especially on weekends. The details on this profile may have shifted since publication, and the producer is always the most authoritative source.
