About Alexis Bailly Vineyard

In the Press: Named Minnesota’s best winery by Tasting Table in its July 2026 feature on the best winery in every US state.

Alexis Bailly Vineyard holds a singular place in Minnesota wine history. Founded in 1973 by David Bailly, it was the first vineyard planted commercially in the state, and the winery that followed in 1978 has been producing wines from Minnesota-grown grapes ever since. Nearly five decades later, Alexis Bailly remains a family operation, now in its second generation, and the wines it produces are a living argument that cold-climate viticulture can yield serious, complex results. The vineyard is tucked into the bluffs south of Hastings, about thirty minutes from the Twin Cities, on rolling farmland that catches good sun exposure and natural drainage. The grapes grown here are cold-hardy hybrids developed specifically for northern climates, including Marechal Foch, Frontenac, and La Crescent, and the winemaking approach is decidedly Old World in ambition.

The Voyageur, a dry red blend, has been the flagship for decades and remains one of the most respected wines made in Minnesota. The tasting room is an experience in itself. The space is rustic and genuine, without pretension, and the staff are happy to walk visitors through the full lineup, from dry reds to a storied ice wine made from grapes left to freeze on the vine. The property also includes bocce courts, a picnic park, a gift shop featuring local artisans, and a deli with provisions for an afternoon on the grounds. Heated yurts have been added for winter visitors, complete with table service, creating a cozy, distinctly Minnesotan tasting experience even in January. Live jazz sessions, particularly on Sundays, have become a draw of their own.

All wines are 100 percent vegan, a commitment the winery has held since its founding. Alexis Bailly is seasonal, typically open Fridays through Sundays from May through Thanksgiving, with limited winter hours. It is the kind of place that rewards a visit not just for the wine, but for the sense of stepping into the origin story of an entire state's wine culture.

Hastings, contact the winery directly for current tasting flights and current-release wines.
