About Alma Fria
Alma Fria, Spanish for "cold soul," was founded in 2012 by the Holtermann family with winemaker Carroll Kemp, co-founder of Red Car, who left his first winery in 2018 to become a full partner in this small West Sonoma Coast project. The estate centers on the 2.56-acre Holtermann Vineyard just north of Annapolis, population 200, five miles from the Sea Ranch coast, where redwoods, fog, and ocean air assert more influence than any winemaker could.
The focus is elegant, organically farmed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from remote ridge-top sites, including historic Richardson Ranch and the above-the-fog Manchester Ridge, made with non-interventionist, ecology-first winemaking. Kemp and his peers also helped drive the creation of the West Sonoma Coast AVA, the slim coastal strip formally approved in May 2022 after a seven-year petition effort.
