Ampelos Cellars takes its name from the ancient Greek ampelos — grapevine, the fundamental plant of all wine culture. In Greek mythology, Ampelos was also a satyr whose death prompted Dionysus (the wine god) to transform him into the grapevine, creating the mythological explanation for the vine's origin. The ampelos naming declares both the botanical (the grapevine as the estate's foundational plant) and the mythological (the satyr transformed into vine, the divine origin of wine culture). The biodynamic Sta. Rita Hills boutique produces Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Grenache from estate vineyard blocks.
