About Asuncion Ridge Vineyards
Asuncion Ridge began in a 1995 wine appreciation class, where winemaker Philip Krumal and Pasadena real estate entrepreneur Michael Dilsaver struck up the friendship that became a shared wine-country dream. They scouted properties across California, bet on then-overlooked Paso Robles, and planted their first Pinot Noir vineyard in 2002 high in the Santa Lucia Mountains overlooking Morro Bay, on a 320-acre ridge property at 2,000 feet just a few miles from the coast. Krumal apprenticed under Windward's Marc Goldberg, Paso's Pinot pioneer, while studying winemaking at UC Davis and cooking at the CIA, and the first Asuncion Ridge vintage arrived in 2005.
The flagship remains Pinot Noir, a rarity in Paso and proof the westside ridges can grow it, joined by Chardonnay, Viognier, rose and bold GSM and Bordeaux blends from sustainable Willow Creek, Templeton Gap, Adelaida, El Pomar and Geneseo fruit, all reds unfined and lightly filtered, around 2,000 cases in total. The partners' Peachy Canyon property in the Willow Creek District completed the dream, vacation rentals joined the fold, and the bustling Templeton tasting room pours daily flights that reviewers score in the low 90s and call some of the region's best value.
