About Babcock Winery & Vineyards
Babcock Winery & Vineyards is one of the most historically Sta. Rita Hills-pioneering and personally Bryan-Babcock-winemaker-conducted family estate appointments in Santa Barbara County. Bryan Babcock established the Highway 246 Lompoc estate in 1984 — when the Sta. Rita Hills was not yet a formally designated wine growing appellation and very few California producers had identified the corridor's world-class Pinot Noir potential. He was among the original pioneering cohort of Santa Barbara County winemakers who established the Sta. Rita Hills' international Pinot Noir reputation through meticulous individual-block viticulture and willingness to make cool-climate, minimal-intervention Pinot Noir before it was fashionable.
Bryan Babcock's winemaking philosophy emphasizes individual vineyard block character, whole-cluster inclusion, native yeast fermentation, and the most minimal-intervention cellar approach that allows each block's specific Pacific wind-channeled Sta. Rita Hills character to express without stylistic imposition. Wine Advocate has recognized the program at 91–96 points across multiple estate expressions.
The daily walk-in format at the Highway 246 estate makes Babcock one of the most accessible and most historically Sta-Rita-Hills-pioneering walk-in appointments in the Lompoc Sta. Rita Hills wine corridor — combining genuine critical quality with the most personally Bryan-Babcock-family-winemaker-historically-pioneering estate identity.
