About Bien Nacido Estate
Bien Nacido is one of the most storied vineyards in California, the beating heart of the Santa Maria Valley and a coveted source of cool-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Brothers Bob and Steve Miller planted the first 300 acres here in 1973 on the historic Rancho Tepusquet, a Mexican land grant whose 1857 Ontiveros adobe still stands on the property; the name means 'well-born' in Spanish.
Perched along the Tepusquet Bench where the Transverse Ranges funnel cool Pacific air and fog across diverse sandy-loam and chalky soils, the vineyard yields fruit so distinctive that many of the Central Coast's most celebrated winemakers have long sourced from it. Today the Miller family bottles its own acclaimed Bien Nacido Estate wines alongside its sister estate, Solomon Hills, closer to the coast.
Visitors taste at The Gatehouse at Bien Nacido, a rustic-chic tasting room set right among the vines. Seated Burgundian and Rhone flights showcase both estates, and guests can elevate the visit with a private electric all-terrain vineyard tour or a sommelier-led experience. The room is open Monday and Thursday through Sunday; reservations are recommended.
