Bodegas Aguirre

Bodegas Aguirre is a family-owned estate winery in the Livermore Valley, east of San Francisco, founded by Dr. Ricardo Aguirre, a cardiac surgeon who fell for the valley's rolling hillsides and bought land on Tesla Road in 1986. He commissioned Wente to plant his first vineyards in the mid-1990s, crushed his first commercial vintage in 2002 and opened to the public in 2006.

The winery focuses on handcrafted, estate-grown reds, with Petite Sirah as its signature wine alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and blends such as the five-varietal Castello Novo, plus some white and dessert wines. It is family-run: Dr. Aguirre tends the vines and makes the wine, daughter Sylvia manages the tasting room and wine club, and wife Margarita oversees the business.

The tasting room at 8580 Tesla Road in Livermore is open on weekends, typically around noon to 4:30pm, with a modest tasting fee often waived with a bottle purchase. Hours can change and larger groups may need to arrange ahead, so it is worth confirming current details before visiting.
