Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards & Winery

Chalk Hill Estate is the defining producer of the Chalk Hill AVA — a distinctive sub-appellation within Russian River Valley named for its unusually pale volcanic ash soils that reflect heat and give the wines a unique mineral signature found nowhere else in Sonoma County.

The estate was founded in 1972 by attorney Fred Furth, who planted the first vines on this 1,300-acre property east of Healdsburg. Chardonnay was the original focus — and Chalk Hill's estate Chardonnay remains one of the most distinctive and terroir-specific expressions of the variety in California, shaped by those chalk-white soils and a microclimate slightly warmer than surrounding RRV appellations.

The estate experience is appropriately refined — visits by appointment only, with access to the production winery, the immaculate estate grounds, and a tasting room that takes its cues from French wine estate hospitality rather than Sonoma casualness.
