The Clarksburg & Delta Wine Region, Explained

What makes Clarksburg & Delta wine country distinct: the appellation story, signature grapes, landscape and how to taste it well.

The Lay of the Land

Clarksburg & Delta wine country means levee roads winding past pear orchards, river channels and working Delta farmland. Set 15 minutes south of downtown Sacramento via River Road, the region rewards travelers who treat the drive itself as part of the tasting.

The anchor experience is the Old Sugar Mill, a 1934 brick sugar-beet refinery housing more than ten tasting rooms under one roof, the stop that orients everything else you taste here.

Grapes and Style

The signature is river-cooled Chenin Blanc, Albarino, Chardonnay and Petite Sirah grown on deep Delta soils. These are wines shaped by their setting rather than fashion, and the best rooms lean into that identity.

For buying, the local wisdom runs: Chenin Blanc is the signature purchase, with old-vine Petite Sirah the sleeper; resident rooms at the mill pour labels sold nowhere else

Tasting It Well

Start at the Old Sugar Mill to taste widely, then pick one levee-road estate, Bogle or Heringer, to see the farms behind the labels

Timing matters: Spring and fall bring the Delta's best weather; summer evenings are saved by the famous Delta breeze that cools the vineyards after hot afternoons
