About Coturri Winery

Enrico Coturri immigrated from Farneta, Italy in 1901 with ten dollars in his pocket and taught his son Harry "Red" Coturri to make wine through Prohibition and the Great Depression. Red and his sons Tony and Phil planted their first two acres on Sonoma Mountain above Glen Ellen in 1967, added five more in 1975, and formally founded Coturri Winery in 1979, becoming pioneering figures of California's natural wine movement decades before the term existed.

Alarmed by postwar agriculture's industrial chemicals, the family committed early to farming and winemaking with essentially nothing between vineyard and glass: head-pruned, dry-farmed vines, native fermentations, and a basket press whose staves came from an oak tree down the road. Tony Coturri remains custodian of the winery today, his 1974-planted Zinfandel vines now over 50 years old, with tastings by appointment on the mountain.

The Coturri family's 1979 Sonoma Mountain winery, a first-wave pioneer of California natural wine with roots in Prohibition-era home winemaking.

Natural wine before it had a name, the Coturris rejected industrial chemicals and additives from the start, making them first-wave pioneers of California's natural wine movement.
Skills learned during Prohibition, patriarch Red Coturri learned winemaking from his Italian immigrant father Enrico through Prohibition and the Depression.
A press built from a neighborhood oak,the winery's basket press was crafted from an oak tree that grew just down the road, fitting for wines made with almost nothing added.
