About Ficklin Vineyards
Ficklin Vineyards is the reason Madera means port in American wine. Founded in 1946, it stands as America's oldest winery devoted to port-style production and its most awarded, with a California State Fair Wine Lifetime Achievement Award among the honors and third-generation winemaker Peter Ficklin still guiding the cellar.
The tasting room wears the history well, vintage tractors and casks lining a space where the pours run through tawny, vintage and old-vine Tinta bottlings that trade blows with Portugal's best. Complimentary tastings for up to four guests keep the visit gracious; larger groups call ahead.
Open Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 4, it is the cornerstone stop of the Madera Wine Trail and a genuine pilgrimage for anyone who takes fortified wine seriously.
