About Gershon Bachus Vintners

The name belongs to a man who never got his vineyard. Gershon Bachus emigrated from Europe in 1922 with his wife and two daughters, kept making wine for family and friends in the way transplanted Europeans did, and never owned the California estate he wanted. Eighty-four years later his grandson Ken and Ken's wife Christina founded this winery in his name. They still run it.

It sits on De Portola Road, the quieter of the valley's two wine routes, laid out like a Tuscan villa with a pond, a waterfall and poplar trees, and it works as a wedding venue as much as a tasting room.

The tasting model is the distinguishing thing. Every visitor gets a fully seated, guided flight with a staff member sitting across from them rather than a counter and a queue, and capacity is deliberately capped to keep it that way. Most tastings happen in the Barrel Room or on the back patio beside the Grenache vines.

The reds are held a long time: 24 to 48 months in Hungarian, French and Eastern European oak, which is longer than the valley norm. Estate plantings run to Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Roussanne, with the rest bought from vineyards usually within five miles.

Head winemaker Dakota Denton is a Temecula native who learned in Baily's production room during harvests and spent eight years at Temecula Valley Winery Management, working across more than twenty valley wineries before taking this role in 2013.

Named for a grandfather who never got his vineyard, and every tasting here is seated.
