About Grand Island Vineyards

If you are building a day along the Sacramento River Delta, Grand Island Vineyards is the stop that turns the levee roads into a destination. You will find it at 12484 Highway 160 in Walnut Grove, on the river side of the highway, where the Salman family has farmed wine grapes for roughly 50 years before opening the winery and tasting room to the public. The estate runs to about 450 acres, which explains the unusual breadth of what gets poured here - Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc on the white side, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and a young Malbec block among the reds, plus a sparkling Bridgehead Bubbles.

The tasting room is open Friday through Monday from 10 am to 5 pm, and by appointment on other days, with seating both indoors and out on the grounds. Expect a relaxed pace rather than a polished Napa production: this is a working family estate that treats visitors like neighbors. Children and dogs are welcome, which makes it one of the more family-practical stops in the Delta. Three labels tell the story of the place - Bridgehead for the everyday river-country wines, Grand Island Vineyards for the estate line, and Salman Family Reserve for the top bottlings.

Plan around the calendar if you can. The winery hosts a steady run of events with live entertainment, fire pits and quarterly parties, and the grounds are a long-established wedding venue, so weekends can carry an event alongside normal tasting. Pair the visit with the Delta's other river-road stops - the Grand Island Mansion, the historic town of Locke and Clarksburg's Old Sugar Mill are all short drives - and give yourself time; the route in from Sacramento is winding and part of the pleasure.

A fifty-year Delta farming family pouring an unusually broad estate range on the banks of the Sacramento River - open Friday to Monday, kids and dogs welcome.
