Nicolaus Hahn — whose Swiss business acumen and European wine culture background led him to purchase Santa Lucia Highlands Foothill Road property in 1980, before the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA was formally designated and when very few California producers recognized the distinctive cool-climate potential of the high-elevation Salinas Valley western ridge — was among the earliest and most committed advocates for the Santa Lucia Highlands' diurnal temperature swing and elevation-influenced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay growing character.
