About Halcón Vineyards
Halcón Vineyards is a small, highly regarded high-elevation estate in the Yorkville Highlands AVA of Mendocino County, perched at about 2,500 feet on a remote ridge overlooking Boonville and the Anderson Valley. It is one of the highest vineyard sites in California, sitting above the fog line where coastal winds and thin, fractured shale, mica-schist and quartz soils yield tiny crops of intensely concentrated fruit.
The 15-acre vineyard was planted in 2005 by Paul and Jackie Gordon, who founded Halcón after falling in love with Mendocino, aiming for cool-climate, Northern-Rhone-style wines. Planted mostly to Syrah with a little Viognier, Grenache and Mourvedre, the estate produces spicy, peppery, structured wines that critics such as Jeb Dunnuck, Vinous and Wine Advocate have ranked among California's finest cool-climate Syrahs.
In 2021 the estate was acquired by winemaker Pax Mahle and Baron Ziegler, who continue to farm the site and make Syrah-focused wines with minimal-intervention, whole-cluster techniques. Halcón is largely allocation-driven with no conventional public tasting room, so anyone seeking the wines or a visit should contact the winery directly.
