About Kunde Family Estate
Kunde Family Estate is the most complete and family-historically rooted large estate in the Sonoma Valley. Six generations of the Kunde family have farmed the same 1,850 acres on Highway 12 in Kenwood since 1904 — when Louis Kunde first purchased the property and planted what would become the largest single-family estate vineyard in the entire Sonoma Valley. That continuity of ownership, farming, and place shows directly in the wines.
The estate spans an extraordinary range of elevations and exposures — from valley floor blocks through hillside plantings up to mountain-top sites that the Kunde family's Mountain Top Experience showcases with some of the most panoramic vineyard views available anywhere in Sonoma County. The cave system — 175 feet underground in the volcanic hillside — provides natural temperature control for barrel aging and the dramatic setting for the Cave Tasting experience.
The Centurion Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's most historically remarkable wine: produced from vines planted in the early 1900s that are among the oldest continuously farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vines in California, the Centurion shows what a century of vine adaptation to a specific Kenwood hillside produces in complexity and depth. Kunde has also been a pioneering California Sauvignon Blanc producer — their Magnolia Lane Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best-reviewed in the state.
