About McCay Cellars
Michael McCay came to Lodi in the early 1980s, began making wine in 1994, and launched the McCay Cellars label in 2007. The winery works in small lots, typically a few hundred cases at a time, aged in French oak, with the emphasis on individual vineyard sites rather than one flagship blend.
In 2011 McCay bought the ten-acre Faith Lot 13 Vineyard, an old-vine Zinfandel planting dating to 1915 and one of the sites that made the case for Lodi's ancient vines being worth bottling separately.
The lineup reaches beyond Zinfandel into Grenache, Carignane, Cinsault, Syrah and other Rhone and Mediterranean varieties, which is the point of visiting: it shows what Lodi fruit does when handled with restraint. Releases are small and change often, so check the current list rather than arriving set on one bottle.
The tasting room is at 18911 North Lower Sacramento Road in Woodbridge, inside the Woodbridge Uncorked venue, not in downtown Lodi where McCay poured previously. Woodbridge is still core Lodi wine country. Published hours are Friday through Sunday, noon to 5pm, with reservations advised for groups of six or more.
