Modales sits in the Fennville AVA, a smaller appellation tucked within the larger Lake Michigan Shore AVA, and has become one of the loudest voices for a region its team calls Michigan's best-kept secret. The winery is part of a new wave taking Southwest Michigan seriously as wine country rather than just beach-town backdrop, drawing weekenders from Chicago as the area's reputation grows.
