About Monteviña Winery
Monteviña Winery holds a singular place in California wine history as the first winery in Amador County to resume production after Prohibition. Founded in 1970 by Cary Gott and his father-in-law Walter Field, the winery released its debut vintage in 1973 and quickly established the Sierra Foothills as a serious winegrowing region. For over five decades, Monteviña has been synonymous with robust, full-bodied Zinfandel and exceptional Barbera — the varieties that thrive in Amador's unique combination of decomposed granite soils, high elevation (1,500 to 2,000 feet), and a climate of hot days and cool nights.
Today the estate encompasses 400 acres of vineyards spread across four properties in the Shenandoah Valley, including several notable old-vine blocks. The winery operates under two labels: the Terra d'Oro line, which represents the higher-end reserve tier sourced from the best estate and local Amador fruit, and the classic Monteviña label focusing on approachable, varietally correct wines. The Italian heritage runs deep here — beyond Zinfandel and Barbera, the estate grows Aglianico, Teroldego, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and the rare Freisa, reflecting a commitment to Mediterranean varieties that mirrors the region's Gold Rush-era Italian immigrant roots.
The tasting room at 20680 Shenandoah School Road in Plymouth offers visitors a relaxed, welcoming experience with both the Monteviña and Terra d'Oro portfolios available to sample. A shaded patio out back makes it ideal for picnicking among the vines. The winery also produces Pinot Grigio, Moscato, and Sauvignon Blanc from company-owned vineyards in Clarksburg, rounding out a diverse portfolio that spans the full spectrum of California winemaking. Whether you're drawn to bold old-vine Zinfandel or curious about obscure Italian varietals grown in Gold Country soil, Monteviña is an essential stop on any Amador County wine tour.
