About Odonata Wines

Odonata Wines is a small family winery on River Road in Salinas, at the northern edge of the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, run by winemaker and owner Denis Hoey. Hoey, a UC Santa Cruz graduate who got his start with Jeff Emery of Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, launched Odonata in 2005 and moved the winery to its current River Road home, the former Marilyn Remark property, in 2014. The name odonata is the insect order that includes dragonflies, which is why a dragonfly appears on the label.

The wines are small-lot and quality-driven, focused on local, sustainably and organically farmed Monterey County fruit. The range is unusually broad for a small producer, spanning Albarino, Chardonnay, Riesling, Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, red blends and traditional-method sparkling wines, with offbeat bottlings appearing under Hoey's Cote du Denis label. Hoey is also known for mentoring younger Monterey County winemakers.

The winery and tasting room sit at the start of the River Road Wine Trail, with a two-acre vineyard, production facility, patio and library room for tastings. Odonata typically welcomes walk-in visitors and also offers private, curated tasting experiences; it is worth confirming current hours and booking any private tasting directly with the winery.
