About Prairie Berry Winery
Prairie Berry Winery is closed. The Hill City tasting room and the adjoining Miner Brewing Company poured for the last time on Sunday, December 22, 2024, ending twenty five years in the Black Hills, with the winery staying open for carry out only through the end of that month. Prairie Berry was founded in 1999 by winemaker Sandi Vojta together with her husband and her father, and the family always framed it as the latest chapter in a five generation South Dakota tradition of home beverage making. Co-founder Ralph Vojta died in 2017 after an illness.
Sandi Vojta trained in chemistry and biology and had been fermenting things since childhood, and the wines reflected that: fruit and berry wines built on old family recipes rather than on the classic European varietals. Red Ass Rhubarb was the flagship and the bottle most visitors came for. The winery entered competitions starting in 2001 and collected more than a thousand international awards over its run. Tastings happened in a twenty thousand square foot production facility a few miles northeast of Hill City, and in 2013 the family opened Miner Brewing Company next door so that a single stop covered both wine and beer.
The Hill City site is no longer open to the public, and the company also closed a Sioux Falls taproom in November 2022 before winding down the main operation. At the time of the closure the family said wine releases would continue only through the website. Hill City itself still sits on the road between Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial and has other visitor businesses. Confirm current details with any Black Hills producer before planning a stop.
