Red Tail Ridge Winery is named for the red-tailed hawk — the most common and recognizable raptor in North America, identified by its distinctive rust-red tail that glows in sunlight. The red-tailed hawks that circle the estate's elevated Fair Play AVA ridge position are the apex raptors of the vineyard ecosystem, their thermal-riding circles marking the same high terrain where the estate's Zinfandel and Barbera grow.

The Fairplay Road estate produces Zinfandel, Barbera, Grenache, and Petite Sirah from Fair Play AVA estate vineyard blocks at high elevation where the red-tailed hawk's thermal-riding demonstrates the warm air rising from the heated California Valley below meeting the cool Sierra Nevada air above.
