About Red Tail Ridge Winery
Red Tail Ridge Winery is a Finger Lakes estate on the western shore of Seneca Lake near Penn Yan, New York, owned and operated by the husband-and-wife team of Mike Schnelle and Nancy Irelan. The couple cleared and planted the roughly 50-acre property themselves, and the winery has become one of the region's most respected cool-climate producers, with a tasting room set on the ridge in the middle of the vineyard overlooking the lake.
The wines emphasize precision, varietal clarity and terroir, spanning Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir alongside less common cool-climate reds such as Blaufrankisch, Dornfelder and Teroldego, plus traditional-method sparkling wines. Production is kept small for a personal, hands-on approach, and the winery is known for experimental, tasting-room-only bottlings.
Sustainability is central to the estate: Red Tail Ridge is New York State's first LEED Gold certified winery, running on geothermal energy and built partly from local stone and recycled materials. Visitors can taste in the Main Tasting Room with its Seneca Lake views or, from spring through late autumn, at the outdoor Pavilion, and leashed dogs are welcome.
