Door Peninsula Wine

Door Peninsula is Wisconsin's premier wine destination, a thumb-shaped landmass extending 75 miles into Lake Michigan between Green Bay and the open lake. The water on three sides moderates Wisconsin's harsh winter climate enough for cold-hardy hybrid grapes to survive and produce genuine quality. Marquette, Frontenac, La Crescent, and Brianna are the dominant varieties, alongside cherry wines that capitalize on the peninsula's famous orchards. Von Stiehl Winery in Algoma (founded 1967) is the region's pioneer, while Door 44, Door Peninsula Winery, and Simon Creek Vineyard represent the next generation. The tasting room scene is concentrated around Sturgeon Bay, Baileys Harbor, and Egg Harbor, charming lakeside villages with Scandinavian heritage, fish boils, and the particular magic of Wisconsin summer.
