About Grand Valley
The Grand Valley AVA is Colorado's most celebrated wine appellation, stretching along the Colorado River near Palisade and Grand Junction on the state's Western Slope. At 4,600 feet above sea level, the region benefits from intense solar radiation, wide diurnal temperature swings, and the sandy, clay-loam soils deposited by the Colorado River, conditions that push grapes to concentrate flavor while preserving the natural acidity that makes wines worth drinking with food.
The Palisade Fruit and Wine Byway is the region's defining visitor experience: a scenic corridor of family-owned wineries, fruit orchards, and farm stands that captures the agricultural character of Colorado's most productive wine district. The Grand Valley's reliable 300-plus days of sunshine, combined with cool nights that drop temperatures by 30-40 degrees from afternoon highs, have made it the proving ground for Colorado viticulture since the 1970s.
Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah are the region's most successful red varietals, while Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer anchor the white program. The combination of high altitude, desert sunshine, and Rocky Mountain nights gives Grand Valley wines a distinctive profile, concentrated, structured, and distinctly Western in character.
