About Hermann Wine Country

Hermann, Missouri is one of the most historically significant wine communities in the United States. German immigrants settled this stretch of the Missouri River in the 1830s, recognizing the limestone bluffs' resemblance to the Rhineland. By 1880, the region was producing more wine than any area outside California. Stone Hill Winery, founded in 1847, survived Prohibition by converting its underground cellars to mushroom farming, and today is Missouri's largest and most visited winery. The Hermann wine corridor produces Norton, America's only successful native red wine grape, along with Vignoles, Chardonel, and Chambourcin. The town of Hermann itself is a National Historic District with German-heritage architecture, excellent restaurants, and a cultural calendar anchored by Oktoberfest and Maifest celebrations.
