The Monadnock Region is southwest New Hampshire at its most quintessentially New England. Covered bridges span rocky streams, stone walls line country roads, and the 3,165-foot summit of Mount Monadnock dominates the horizon. It's also home to a small but dedicated community of craft wine and cider producers.
The region's wine scene draws on deep agricultural roots. Apple orchards that have been farmed for generations now supply cider houses, while new vineyards of cold-hardy hybrid grapes are establishing themselves in the sheltered valleys between granite ridges. Fruit wines made from blueberries, cranberries, and rhubarb round out the local portfolio.
A Monadnock wine tour is less about wine per se and more about the complete New England experience. You'll drive winding roads through postcard-perfect villages, taste wines poured by the people who grew the fruit, and probably end the day with a mountain hike or a meal at a farm-to-table restaurant. The pace is unhurried and the welcome is warm.
