About North Alabama

North Alabama's wine scene is shaped by the same geographic features that define the region's character: the Tennessee River, the rolling ridges of Sand Mountain, and the cooler temperatures that come with elevation above the coastal plain. The wineries here benefit from slightly longer growing seasons than their counterparts further south, and soils that range from the red clay of Madison County to the chert-rich loams of Etowah County.

The area around Huntsville has developed an increasingly sophisticated food and beverage culture, and its wineries have benefited from a resident population that travels and has developed genuine wine literacy. Further east in Etowah and Winston Counties, the estates sit in more rural settings with a character closer to traditional farm winery hospitality.

North Alabama wines tend toward the styles that suit the region's warm, humid summer climate: Muscadine in its various expressions, cold-hardy hybrids like Chambourcin and Chardonel, and an increasing number of experiments with Merlot and Cabernet Franc on south-facing hillsides that capture maximum warmth.
