The Outer Coastal Plain is where New Jersey's wine future is being written. This broad AVA covers the southern third of the state, from the ecologically unique Pine Barrens through the agricultural heartland of Cumberland and Salem counties to the Atlantic shore. The sandy, well-drained soils and maritime-moderated climate create growing conditions that consistently produce the state's best fruit.
Chambourcin is the region's signature grape, a French-American hybrid that thrives in the Mid-Atlantic climate and produces wines with genuine depth and character. Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Viognier also perform well, and many producers supplement their grape wines with excellent fruit wines made from the blueberries and cranberries that the Pine Barrens grow in abundance.
Visiting the Outer Coastal Plain means driving the quiet agricultural roads of south Jersey, passing farm stands and horse farms between tasting stops. It feels nothing like the Turnpike stereotypes. The wineries are welcoming, the wines are genuinely improving with each vintage, and you're never more than a short drive from the Jersey Shore.
