Outer Coastal Plain Wine
Sandy Pine Barrens soils and Atlantic maritime influence produce aromatic whites and lighter reds across southern New Jersey, paired with farm stands, blueberries, and Jersey Shore proximity.
About Outer Coastal Plain Wine
The Outer Coastal Plain AVA covers southern New Jersey's distinctive Pine Barrens ecosystem, where acidic, sandy soils and Atlantic Ocean influence create growing conditions quite different from the state's mountainous northwest. The wines tend to be lighter, more aromatic, and higher in acidity than Warren Hills reds, with fruit-forward character that reflects the sandy terrain. The region's wine tourism pairs naturally with South Jersey's famous farm stands, blueberry fields, and the Jersey Shore beach culture. Bellview Winery, Sharrott Winery, and Tomasello Winery are among the most established producers. The Outer Coastal Plain wine trail connects tasting rooms through flat, agrarian countryside that feels nothing like the suburban New Jersey of popular imagination.
