Puget Sound & Islands Wine Country

Wine on maritime time: Seattle's SODO cellars, ferry rides to Bainbridge and Vashon tasting rooms, Whidbey's farm wineries, Friday Harbor's island vineyard, and the only AVA in Washington grown west of the mountains - Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe and Pinot Noir in a climate the rest of the state cannot copy.

About Puget Sound & Islands Wine Country

Puget Sound wine country is the Washington the rest of the state's wine map forgets: maritime, green and grown on glacial ground west of the Cascades. The Puget Sound AVA, designated in 1995, is still the state's only appellation on this side of the mountains, a lowland arc running from the Canadian border to below Olympia and out through the islands. The vineyards are small - roughly a hundred acres in vine - but they grow what eastern Washington cannot: Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe and Muller-Thurgau alongside cool-climate Pinot Noir, early-ripening varieties suited to mild summers and a 15-to-60-inch rainfall gradient.

The visiting is defined by water. Seattle's urban cellars pour in SODO and the city's neighborhoods; Bainbridge Island's rooms sit a ferry ride from downtown, on the island where Gerard Bentryn planted the AVA's first modern vines in 1977 and later authored its federal petition; Whidbey's farm wineries cluster around Langley; Vashon, Marrowstone and the San Juans each keep a vineyard or two; Port Townsend pours in its Victorian seaport; and the Whatcom farms reach nearly to Canada. Many rooms pour both estate island fruit and eastern Washington lots - read the label line by line and you taste both Washingtons in one sitting.

Plan around ferries and seasons: island rooms run weekend-forward schedules, the Seattle cellars fill after work, and the coast's garden resort at Westport makes the far southwest worth the drive. It is wine touring at walking pace, salt air included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Puget Sound AVA?

Designated in 1995, it is Washington's only appellation west of the Cascades - a maritime lowland region from the Canadian border to below Olympia, including the islands, growing cool-climate varieties like Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe, Muller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir on gravelly glacial soils.

Are there wineries in Seattle itself?

Yes - the city keeps a set of urban cellars and tasting rooms, from the SODO district to the neighborhoods, pouring both local and eastern Washington fruit without leaving town.

Which islands have tasting rooms?

Bainbridge, Whidbey, Vashon, Marrowstone, San Juan and Lopez all host wineries or vineyards; most are a ferry ride plus a short drive, and island schedules lean toward weekends - confirm hours before sailing.

Do Puget Sound wineries grow their own grapes?

Many do, on small estate plantings of the AVA's signature early-ripening varieties, while also producing wines from eastern Washington fruit - the region's rooms commonly pour both.
