About Suisun Valley Wine Country
Suisun Valley sits in western Solano County, just east of Napa Valley and directly west of Fairfield, tucked between the Vaca Mountains and the Howell Mountains. Recognized as an American Viticultural Area in 1982, it is one of California's oldest appellations, yet it remains one of its least discovered: a working farm valley of roughly sixteen mostly family wineries.
The valley's calling card is its climate. Cool marine air draws off San Pablo Bay each afternoon, giving the valley a roughly 14 degree temperature swing from its lower to upper reaches and long, even ripening across more than twenty grape varieties. Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc lead the way, with Chardonnay, Barbera, and Grenache close behind.
Locals call it 'Napa's backside,' and the comparison fits: down-home tasting rooms, winemakers who often pour their own wine, and honest pricing give Suisun the feel of Napa a half century ago. Most stops line the Suisun Valley Road loop and Mankas Corner, and the Suisun Valley Wine Cooperative gathers several boutique labels under one roof.
