Tri-Cities Wine Country
Where the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima Rivers meet, the Tri-Cities anchor Washington's vast Columbia Valley, a high-desert powerhouse for ripe, structured red wine.
About Tri-Cities
The Tri-Cities of Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland sit at the geographic and cultural center of Washington wine country, where the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima Rivers converge in the vast Columbia Valley AVA. This high-desert basin in south-central Washington receives abundant sunshine and very little rainfall, so growers rely on river-fed irrigation to farm some of the most consistent red-wine vineyards in the country.
The defining feature of the region is its dramatic swing between hot, sun-drenched days and cool nights. That diurnal shift lets grapes build ripeness and color while retaining the acidity that keeps the wines balanced. Sandy, well-drained soils, many deposited by the ancient Missoula Floods, limit vine vigor and are largely free of the phylloxera louse, allowing many vineyards to grow on their own roots.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah are the calling cards here, joined by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and increasingly serious white wines. The Tri-Cities also serve as the gateway to prized neighboring appellations like Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, and the Wahluke Slope. Riverfront tasting rooms and estate wineries make it an easy, welcoming base for exploring eastern Washington, roughly three and a half hours from Seattle across the Cascades.
