About San Rucci Winery

San Rucci is Bakersfield's urban winery, working out of a production space on Schirra Court rather than a country estate. The name combines two family names, San Filippo and Becherucci, and the wines follow a family tradition the owners trace back roughly ninety years to Tuscan and Sicilian roots.

Because the winery owns no vineyards, it buys fruit from growers across California, which lets it work with Italian varieties that rarely appear in New World bottlings. Montepulciano and Graciano turn up alongside more familiar grapes, and the list extends to a sherry, which is unusual for a small producer. Guided tastings come with the story behind each label, and homemade taralli tend to appear alongside the pours.

Hours are narrow and worth planning around: Friday late afternoon into evening, Saturday afternoon into evening, with special events on some Thursdays and visits outside those windows by arrangement. For a city better known for oil and agriculture than wine, it is a genuine find, and for travellers crossing the southern Central Valley it is one of very few tasting rooms on the route.

Bakersfield's first urban winery, pouring Montepulciano and Graciano from a production space on Schirra Court.
