About Sans Liege Wines
Sans Liege, without allegiance, is Curt Schalchlin's declaration of independence, a name born in Bernard Gripa's Saint-Joseph cellar in 2005, when the domaine's son confessed he envied American winemakers their freedom even as Schalchlin envied the French their history. The San Luis Obispo college graduate turned that exchange into a label built on Rhone varieties, Grenache above all, sourced from Central Coast vineyards from Paso Robles to Solvang, fermented on each site's native yeasts and blended by intuition rather than recipe. Blends like The Offering earned the house a reputation as California's answer to Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Schalchlin became one of Tin City's founding forces, his tasting room anchoring the industrial district alongside his value-tier Groundwork label of single-variety Rhones, the Aesop-labeled Fableist collaboration with Field Recordings' Andrew Jones, and their jointly founded Tin City Cider. Two decades and more than 700 bottled wines into a career that included years of custom-crush work for other dreamers, Schalchlin operates tasting rooms in both Tin City and Pismo Beach, still chasing the conviction that his best work is ahead of him.
