About Stony Hill Vineyard

Fred and Eleanor McCrea, an advertising executive and his wife searching for a summer home, bought 168 hillside acres on Spring Mountain in 1943 that had previously served as a goat ranch. Devoted to French white Burgundy, they built their winery in 1951 and released their first Chardonnay, then labeled Pinot Chardonnay, in 1952, selling largely through hand-written letters that became Napa Valley's first winery mailing list.

Mike Chelini, who joined as assistant winemaker in 1972, took over after Fred's death in 1977 and stayed for more than four decades, upholding the McCreas' signature style of neutral-oak aging with no malolactic fermentation. After 75 years of McCrea family ownership, Stony Hill sold to Long Meadow Ranch's Hall family in 2018, then to Gaylon Lawrence Jr. and Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr. in 2020, whose Lawrence Wine Estates also owns Heitz Cellar and Burgess Cellars.

Napa's first mailing-list winery, the McCreas began selling their tiny Chardonnay production through hand-written letters to friends in the early 1950s, a practice that became Napa Valley's first winery mailing list.
One winemaker for over forty years,Mike Chelini took over after founder Fred McCrea's death in 1977 and continued making Stony Hill's wines in the same restrained style until the estate changed hands decades later.
A deliberately unoaked Chardonnay,Stony Hill has aged its Chardonnay in neutral oak and blocked malolactic fermentation since 1952, producing a lean, mineral style built to age for a decade or more.

Appointment with Napa Valley's most historically continuous Chardonnay program (1947), Spring Mountain Chardonnay in the mineral, austere, age-worthy style that three generations of the McCrea family have maintained for eight decades without stylistic compromise. Stony Hill's Semillon, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer complete the most historically principled white wine appointment in the western Napa Valley ridge corridor.
