About Tablas Creek Vineyard

Tablas Creek is the culmination of a friendship dating to 1967 between two of the wine world's leading families: the Perrins of Chateau de Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and importer Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands. Convinced that Rhone grapes would thrive in California's Mediterranean climate, the partners searched the state for four years before buying a 120-acre former alfalfa farm in 1989, twelve miles from the Pacific in what is now the Adelaida District, its shallow rocky limestone soils of the same geologic origin as Beaucastel's. Beginning in 1990 they imported vine cuttings directly from France, endured the USDA's three-year quarantine, and built their own grapevine nursery, ultimately supplying millions of Rhone vines to growers nationwide and effectively seeding California's modern Rhone movement.

The estate has been organic since inception (certified 2003), Biodynamic since 2010 (certified 2017), and in 2020 became the first regeneratively farmed vineyard in the world, farmed largely dry with a grazing herd of sheep, alpacas and donkeys. With the 2019 planting of Muscardin, Tablas Creek became the first estate outside France to grow the complete collection of Chateauneuf-du-Pape varieties. The winery also drafted the 1996 petition that created the Paso Robles AVA and helped drive the research behind the Adelaida District sub-AVA. Flagship Esprit de Tablas blends anchor a lineup of roughly 29 wines; seated tastings run daily from 10am to 4pm on Adelaida Road.

Tablas Creek remains Paso’s great classroom: founded in the 1990s by importer Robert Haas with the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel to find California’s best home for Rhone varieties, the Adelaida Road tasting room is where locals send anyone who wants to actually learn something.
