About Tangent Winery
Tangent Winery takes its name from geometry — a tangent line touches a curve at one point and then departs in a new direction, diverging from the expected path. Applied to wine, Tangent signals a deliberate departure: instead of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that define most Edna Valley estates, Tangent pursues aromatic white varieties typically associated with Alsace, the Loire, and Iberia.
The Niven family — who also produce Baileyana Winery wines on the same Biddle Ranch Rd property — created Tangent specifically to explore what Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Albariño, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay accomplish in Edna Valley's distinctive cool maritime environment. The Pacific's daily fog influence creates a growing season unusually long and cool for California, ideal for the aromatic precision these varieties require.
Wine Spectator has scored Tangent's Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Albariño at 89–92 points, confirming that the Edna Valley's climate produces genuinely interesting aromatic whites beyond Chardonnay.
