About Topel Winery
Topel Winery is a very small Mendocino County estate built on a former sheep farm in the Sanel Valley above Hopland, California. The Topel family found the property in the late 1980s and recognised what the hillside could do. The holding runs to 160 acres at about 1,400 feet of elevation, but only fifteen of those acres carry vines; the rest, as the winery puts it, is left to the oaks, the manzanita and the hawks. Every vine is farmed by hand, with no tractors and no machines, which is unusual even among boutique producers and sets the ceiling on how much wine can exist.
The current list is short and red: a Highlands Cuvee red blend from Mendocino, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Mendocino County and a Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena in the Napa Valley, with Martin Bernal-Hafner directing the winemaking. Directory listings have long placed the tasting room not at the ranch but at 125 Matheson St in Healdsburg, right on the plaza in Sonoma County, a salon-style room an hour and a half south of the vineyard. That arrangement, vineyard in one county and tasting room in another, is how most visitors have met the wines.
Plan this one with a phone call first. The winery's current website sells wine online and tells the story of the Hopland estate but publishes no tasting room address, hours, fee or booking details, so it is not clear whether the Healdsburg room is still pouring. The contacts the site does give are 707-540-4311 and martin@topelwines.com. If the Healdsburg room is open, the plaza puts dozens of other tasting rooms within a few minutes' walk. Confirm current details, including whether tastings are available at all, before you travel.
