Altus has been producing wine continuously since 1880 — a heritage that spans Reconstruction, Prohibition, two World Wars, and the rise of the modern American wine industry, all without a single generation abandoning the vineyards.

About Altus Wine Country

Altus is the birthplace of Arkansas wine — a small Ozark Mountain community where Swiss and German immigrants established vineyards in the 1880s that their descendants are still farming today.

The concentration of fourth-generation wineries in and around Altus, combined with the town's genuine heritage character, makes it the most historically significant wine destination in Arkansas.

Post Winery, Wiederkehr Wine Cellars, Mount Bethel Winery, and Chateau Aux Arc all operate within minutes of the Altus town square.
