About Dahlonega Wine Country
Dahlonega is the most compelling wine destination in the American South — a walkable historic town square where America's first gold rush happened in 1828, now surrounded by more than a dozen tasting rooms producing Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Touriga Nacional from Blue Ridge hillside vineyards.
The Dahlonega Plateau AVA, established in 2018, gave federal recognition to what visitors already knew: the combination of 1,500-foot elevation, decomposed granite soils, and cool mountain nights creates growing conditions genuinely suited to premium vinifera grapes. Wolf Mountain, Montaluce, Three Sisters, Kaya, and Frogtown have built reputations extending well beyond Georgia's borders.
A weekend in Dahlonega follows a natural rhythm: morning at the square's coffee shops, afternoons in the tasting rooms, evenings at dinner restaurants that have grown up around the wine culture. The drive up GA-400 from Atlanta takes 90 minutes but feels like a different world.

Planning Your Dahlonega Visit
Getting There
Take GA-400 North from Atlanta to Dahlonega — about 75 miles, 1.5 hours without traffic. Park on or near the historic square; most tasting rooms are walkable from there.
When to Visit
Spring (April–May) and fall (September–November) are the best seasons. Fall brings harvest energy and autumn color in the Blue Ridge. Summer is warm but manageable at elevation.
