About Twisted Oak Winery
Twisted Oak Winery is named for the twisted Valley Oak trees that grow throughout the foothill terrain around Murphys and Vallecito in Calaveras County — the gnarled, ancient oaks whose twisted trunks and irregular growth patterns declare decades of adaptation to the dry, rocky Gold Rush country soils. Jeff Stai's winery takes its character from these ancient trees: wine made with the same adaptation philosophy, working with the terrain's challenges rather than against them.
The Red Hill Road estate in Vallecito produces Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Verdelho, and Rhône varieties from Calaveras County estate vineyards with the gnarled-oak adaptation philosophy the name implies. Wine Spectator has scored Twisted Oak's Zinfandel and Tempranillo at 88–92 points.
