About Valley of the Moon Winery
Valley of the Moon Winery takes its name from the indigenous Wappo name for the Sonoma Valley — the Valley of the Moon — that Jack London immortalized in his 1913 novel of the same name. The estate itself dates to 1861, making it one of California's oldest continuously operating wine properties, and the Madrone Road Glen Ellen location sits in the same scenic hills above Sonoma that London called home during the most productive years of his life.
The modern winery era began in 1941 and the estate has changed hands several times since, most recently coming under ownership that has committed to maintaining the property's historic character while improving the wine program's focus and quality. The estate produces Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, and Chardonnay from Sonoma Valley terrain that the estate's 160-year history has established as capable of genuine variety across multiple grape types.
The daily walk-in format, dog and family friendliness, and picnic grounds on the historic Glen Ellen estate create a genuine community-oriented wine country experience that connects visitors to the Sonoma Valley's deepest agricultural roots — and to the literary heritage of one of California's most celebrated authors.
