Whitestone Winery

Whitestone Winery is a family estate on the shores of Lake Roosevelt, the largest body of water in Washington, set behind Grand Coulee Dam on the Whitestone Ranch. Walter and Judy Haig fell in love with the land around Whitestone Rock after years boating the lake, and in 1994 they planted the Lake Roosevelt Shores Vineyard, reintroducing wine grapes to this remote, strikingly beautiful corner at the far northeastern edge of the Columbia Valley AVA.

The estate site, a south-facing slope around 1,600 feet on sandy-loam soils, proved ideal for red grapes. The first harvest came in 1996 and was sold to Walla Walla wineries; the Haigs began making their own wine in 2001. Whitestone is deliberately red-only, crafting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc exclusively from its estate vineyard, with Michael Haig as winemaker. The winery now also operates under the Lake Roosevelt Wine Company name.

Approachable, fruit-forward, and balanced, Whitestone's wines reflect a genuine sense of place. The downtown Wilbur tasting room keeps seasonal and by-appointment hours, and estate visits along the lakeshore can be arranged, well worth the drive for the scenery alone.
