About Wiederkehr Wine Cellars & Weinkeller Restaurant
Wiederkehr is Arkansas wine's mother house: the Swiss family's Altus mountain village, pouring since 1880, serves its wines beside the Weinkeller Restaurant set in the original hand-dug cellar on the National Register, alpine-chapel grounds and five generations making Wiederkehr Village the state's living wine history.
Founding-era provenance and cellar-restaurant romance built landmark standing. The Swiss came, the state followed.
Wiederkehr anchors the Altus sub-appellation of the Ozark Mountain AVA, the three-state appellation established in 1986 across Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma that ranks among the largest in the country, with roughly 70 wineries and around 4,500 planted acres. Limestone-based soils with sandstone and clay give the region's hillside vineyards their drainage, and cold-hardy hybrids alongside Norton dominate the plantings across the AVA.
