About Wilderotter Vineyard

Wilderotter Vineyard is a small family winery in the California Shenandoah Valley, the Amador County heart of the Sierra Foothills. A husband-and-wife team bought forty acres here in 1990 and farmed grapes for other local producers before making their own wine; the first estate bottlings came from the 2002 harvest and the tasting room went up in 2003. The family name is German, and the winery translates it as wild red.

Nearly everything starts in the home vineyard. The list runs to Zinfandel, Syrah, Barbera, Viognier, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc and a Grenache rose, with a Cabernet Sauvignon made from Napa Valley fruit, and production sits at roughly 2,100 cases. The tasting room is a brown adobe-sided building under a tile roof, with secluded patios, artwork on the walls and a picnic area outside, which makes it a place to linger rather than a quick stop on a Shenandoah Road run.

The winery is at 19890 Shenandoah School Rd, Plymouth, CA 95669, phone (209) 245-6016. Listings disagree on visiting hours: Wine Routes shows daily 10:30 am to 5 pm, while California Winery Advisor shows Thursday through Monday, 11 am to 4 pm, with a complimentary tasting. Plymouth is a short drive off Highway 49 and pairs easily with the other Shenandoah Valley wineries. Confirm current hours, fees and reservation policy with the winery before you go.

Forty Shenandoah Valley acres bought in 1990, estate wines since 2002, poured under adobe walls and a tile roof.
