About Woodward Canyon Winery
Woodward Canyon Winery was founded in 1981 by Rick Small in the Walla Walla Valley — making it one of the earliest estate wineries in the region and one of the founding voices in what became Washington's wine revolution. Small's Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from his own estate vineyard and purchased Walla Walla and Columbia Valley fruit, established that Washington wine could achieve elegance alongside power.
The Old Vines Cabernet, produced from 1976 plantings at the Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, is one of Washington's most historically significant wines — old vine character and decades of vineyard history combining with Woodward Canyon's precise winemaking to produce Cabernet of extraordinary depth. The estate vineyard adjacent to the winery, planted in the early 1980s, continues to produce exceptional Merlot and Cabernet.
Woodward Canyon's tasting room in Lowden sits between the estate vineyard and historic farmland, maintaining the agricultural character that distinguished Walla Walla before wine tourism arrived. Rick's family continues to operate the winery with the same commitment to quality without celebrity that has characterized its four decades.
