About Alamitos Vineyards

Alamitos Vineyards holds two titles most wineries would kill for: San Jose's only vineyard winery, and USA Today 10Best's Best New Winery Experience in the country for 2023. The private estate sits in the hills of historic New Almaden - one of the only privately owned parcels within Santa Clara County's 4,163-acre Quicksilver park, above the Almaden Reservoir, where the 1847 mercury mines once sparked California's great migration.

The winemaking is a genuine family legacy. Proprietor Shaun Coleman's maternal grandfather, John Enos Vargas, made wine in the 1910s on Faial in Portugal's Azores before sailing to Livermore in 1923, where he worked cellars at Concannon and Cresta Blanca - including the white wines for Old Almaden Winery, California's first, just miles from where Alamitos stands today. That Portuguese thread runs straight into the estate's signature: Touriga Nacional, made as a red, a dry rose, and a port, alongside small-batch Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet, crafted by George, a third-generation vintner with 30 years of Central Coast experience. Co-founder Chris Maune brings Silicon Valley startup energy to the operation.

The visit is the sell: reservation-only weekend tastings poured from a vintage 1964 Silver Streak trailer at a bar built from 150-year-old reclaimed Gilroy barn wood, outdoors over hillside views of Quicksilver park and the reservoir (the Casita covers inclement weather). Saturdays and Sundays 11 to 4 with the last reservation at 3, $30 for a 60-minute four-wine seasonal flight, 21 and over, gates opening at 11 - and weekdays or evenings bookable as private events. Expect a limited winter schedule, an annual wine club, and the owners themselves greeting guests.

Wine from a 1964 Silver Streak in the quicksilver hills - San Jose's only vineyard winery, and America's best new one of 2023.
