About Amalie Robert Estate

Amalie Robert Estate sits on a hillside outside Dallas, at the western edge of the Willamette Valley and a long way from the tasting-room traffic of Dundee and Newberg. Dena Drews and Ernie Pink founded it in 1999, leaving first careers behind to farm an old cherry orchard they believed was sitting on top of a very good vineyard site.

The name is a straightforward piece of family arithmetic: Amalie is Dena's middle name, Robert is Ernie's. They still do the work themselves, acting as both vineyard managers and winemakers rather than hiring the roles out.

The estate now runs to roughly 34 acres and 50,000 vines planted in sedimentary soils, directly abutting the well-regarded Freedom Hill vineyard. Everything bottled under the label is estate grown; they neither buy fruit in nor sell it on. The winery itself is a multi-level gravity-flow building, largely underground, built from around 1,200 tons of concrete.

Pinot Noir is the centre of the range and is fermented with a high proportion of whole clusters and native yeast, then barrel aged and blended for the long haul. Chardonnay, Viognier, a Blanc de Noir and a dry rosé of Pinot Noir round things out. This is a small, deliberately low-profile operation, and visits are by appointment rather than drop-in.

A husband-and-wife estate that farms its own fruit, makes its own wine and keeps deliberately out of the spotlight.

Genuinely estate grown, all fruit comes off their own vineyard; they do not buy grapes in or sell them to anyone else.
Founders still doing the work,Dena Drews and Ernie Pink have managed the vineyard and made the wine themselves since 1999.
A serious neighbour, the vineyard abuts Freedom Hill, one of the better known sites in the southern Willamette Valley.
Gravity-flow winery,a multi-level building of roughly 1,200 tons of concrete, mostly below ground.
Off the tourist track, well west of the Dundee cluster, on gravel roads, and quiet as a result.
"Low-profile, estate-grown Willamette Pinot Noir from the people who farm the vines."
