About Artesano LLC / Artesano Mead

Artesano is a meadery in the village center of Groton, Vermont, in the Northeast Kingdom, run by Mark Simakaski and Nichole Wolfgang. It is housed in an old general store at 1334 Scott Highway. Simakaski's beekeeping in Vermont goes back to 1995, and the name comes from the Spanish word for craftsman, chosen after he and his wife returned from Argentina.

The meads are fermented from local honey and fruit and run still, sparkling and dessert style, dry through sweet, in bottlings that have included raspberry, blueberry and chili-cinnamon alongside traditional and spiced versions. Tonics and vinegars come out of the same shop. From late May into early October they also scoop small-batch seasonal ice cream, both owners having gone through Penn State's ice cream program, using Vermont honey, Hatchland Farm dairy and fruit from Vermont growers. Simakaski has said he has no plans to expand because it is fun at this scale.

Published hours for the mead tasting room have run Wednesday through Sunday noon to 8 pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Thursday through Sunday noon to 6 pm from Labor Day to Columbus Day, and Saturdays only 11 am to 4 pm from Columbus Day into the new year. One Vermont visitor directory has more recently flagged the place as temporarily closed, so the current status is genuinely uncertain. No tasting fee or reservation policy is published. The phone number on file is (802) 584-9000. Confirm that they are open, and confirm hours and fees, before you drive to Groton.
